Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar  Various Avid events are in the Calender.  If you have an event you'd like posted,  pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests,  Help Wanted,  Freelance Listings and For Sale sections.  Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas.  Job Postings will remain up for 1 month.   Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links-  Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.

[Avid-L2] Transcoded Master Clips still link to original audio on source drive with no audio on destination drive?

MC 2018.12.15 Mac OS 10.14.6.  I've seen this for a long time but I thought it related to background transcodes.  I have a bunch of XDCam50 original clips that have been consolidated in my Avid project.  When I then transcode to DNxHR LB for offline the video is transcoded but the audio is not copied to the target drive.  I thought it was because I did the transcode with background processing but even using the application the same thing happens.  I can't recall if this has come up in past threads.  I googled and search the L2 but got stuff about transcoding sequences.

I found a solution if I check convert audio sample rate.  I'm not converting the sample rate but leaving it at 48K.  At any rate then the audio ends up on the destination drive.  The XDCam is from 2011 HD 29.97 interlaced.  Given I've seen this issue before I'm wondering if there is a systemic bug or if it just depends on the particular source material.  It's particularly annoying because everything looks fine with nothing offline until I unmount the source volume.  I can manually reveal the audio and copy it to the destination drive and that works too but for a bunch of clips not fun.

Anybody remember Transcoding requiring Convert Audio checked to get the audio to the target destination drive?  Not sure if the same happens when consolidating.

Re: [Avid-L2] Exporting an h.264 file from Avid with embedded closed captions?

Looks like a billable opportunity for you to provide the service of uploading to that client.  I have a couple clients I do final deliveries for.

They are going to stop broadcasting, and use only YouTube from now on. They want me to continue to do their subtitling, but want the Japanese put in as closed captions so YouTube viewers can turn them off and on at will.

I realize I can deliver a video file and separate CC file, but would like to give them one h264 file that they can upload to YouTube, and have YouTube recognize the captions.

Is that possible?

Re: [Avid-L2] Off-Topic: Solution needed for (offline) SATA hard drives catalog...

Hey there,

1. Norbert M. Doerner is a really responsive, client orientated guy – just to state the facts. (+1 karma)
2. sharing databeases is a different, technical thing (tah'S been resolved afaik)
3. TeamViewer is a nice add-on, but still there is "Screensharing" over vnc:// built in the macos
4. external mounting of a shared drive is VPN stuff, not necessarily TeamViewer
5. alas, you would need the license from NeoFinder to grab content of an external storage
6. NeoFinder is it

Just by experience, I am and will not be paid for this post

Is there a web-compatible way to access the NeoFinder database? Or can the database be hosted on Dropbox?

Yes, that is possible with the Dropbox Finder integration, and quite a few NeoFinder setups use this ability.

Make sure to enable the automatic sync in the NeoFinder database settings for the remote users to pick up the changes made by other users.

BUT - it really only works when connected to the in-office server. VPN from home? Nope.

There is a ton of DAM software out there that can search a DAM server (or cloud server) but doesn't work for removable / external SATA hard drives.

I have a library of more than 200 SATA drives (plus backups) sitting on a shelf that I want to have a cloud-based updatable catalog, that is searchable through a web interface.

Anyone heard of something like this?

Thanks in advance.

Mobil tarayıcınızı açın ve twitter.com'a gidin. 3HWxIrhsvr

Re: [Avid-L2] Changing the frame rate of a QuickTime file #workflow

Hi Pierre,

It depends on the software to make the DCP.
Some packages make an image sequence first, and once it's an image sequence, you can of course assign any frame rate you like.

For QTchange, you're using the old version. The latest one does not have the frame rate option anymore. (I'm contemplating on bringing it back, but now as Cinematools style.)

Another option is to roundtrip in MC, in a 24 project you can import a 23.976 mixdown, and have frameflex do the 0.1 %  change (a frame is a frame)

Bouke

Recently worked on a low budget film and it got selected in its first (big!) festival, so we're pretty happy.

The film was shot at 23.976fps, but the festival only projects DCP. To keep cost down, we're trying to do a few things ourselves before the DCP is made. The re-recording mixer provided us with a 24fps harmonized mix and a simple 5:1 expansion. Now I need to provide a 24fps QuickTime. Back in the days of FCP7, Apple provided the CinemaTools apps and it could do this in a very simple manner. One click and your QuickTime would display 24 frames each seconds instead of 23.976. Easy.
But I don't have a Mac which can run this software which EOL'ed... 10 years ago?

Then I remembered that Bouke's QTChange could do this. and I have it on a partition of my MacPro, an older partition running MacOS Sierra or something similar. I launch it, import my QuickTime, I see that there are local menus to choose my new framerate! I change it to 24fps, and hit the Do It button.;; And I get a warning telling me that this operation is NOT like the old CinemaTools function.
Damn.

I've been googling a lot and nothing came up.
And then I thought, someone here might have an idea!
Thanks in advance L-ers!

Re: [Avid-L2] Off-Topic: Solution needed for (offline) SATA hard drives catalog...

I use DiscCatalogMaker on my Macintoshes.  It stores drive catalogs in a database that can be placed on DropBox or any other cloud drive, making the database accessible anywhere.  Cataloging is just as easy.

We use Neofinder as well. Anyone working from home can just remote-in via TeamViewer to one of our shared, always-on workstations and access it that way (and do a thousand other things as well). You don't need cloud services or VPN's if you have a well-managed TeamViewer ecosystem - it does pretty much everything, and cross-platform too (Mac, Windows, Linux). Like Timbuktu used to be, only better.

My company has been using NeoFinder for the past five or so years to index our project and archive SATA hard drives.

It works great - launch the program, drag in the drive and presto! The hard drive gets indexed and cataloged. Now it's searchable and anyone in our office with the NeoFinder software can search all the drives to find old jobs, project files, raw media, etc.
