[Avid-L2] Re: Safe Color difference in clips between Avid and Non Avid Hardware Revisiting?

 

I've seen the lift you are talking about. But I didn't see it until a 4K project as I never used the safe color effect prior to that. We always used external legalizers going to tape and we play out and capture on another system for file creation. Since we don't have a baseband video 4K setup, this is now an issue.

[Avid-L2] Sony FS7 AVC clips long gop variable bit rate?

There are a lot of variables with that camera, and AMA may have some quirks with some of the more...umm...exotic...settings.  Its been awhile since I have worked in Avid 6.x, but I remember running into some FS 7 1080p stuff that was AVC and Avid would not deal with it at all. Had to transcode it in Adobe Media Encoder.  This was fixed in MC7 or 8.x.

Is this footage possibly AVC-S media I've read about?  If so I guess this means the Avid ama plugin, which I installed a while back now handles AVC-S.  The media also works in premiere 2015.  So much for getting out early on a Friday night.  Oh well I guess I learned something but I'm just not sure what I learned.  Given all the other cards worked without issue and showed up as XDCam 422 why did this one card come in as a completely different format?  It's not some special over cranked material.  I guess it was just a different day shooting and nobody bothered to match all the other days of shooting?  Or maybe a different crew and different FS7.  Doesn't anybody check this Crap in the field.  Oh wait how would we save it in post if they didn't give us this crap.  ;-(

That camera can shoot both formats.  Its not AVC-S.  That still does not work in Avid.

[Avid-L2] Safe Color difference in clips between Avid and Non Avid Hardware Revisiting?

 

A while back I was curious why the Safe Color Limit effect from my work system Mac Pro 12 core upgraded  mid 2010 OS 10.9.5 SNDX Avid 8.5.2 responded differently and elevated the black level substantially on my home system a Mac Pro mid 2012 12 core with a DNxIO Avid 8.5.3.  Dave H confirmed that the Safe Color Effect responds differently with Avid IO hardware vs. 3rd party IO. 

The other quirky thing I found was that setting RGB limits to 16-235 actually raised the black level slightly above 0 mV.  The same behavior happened on the Nitris system at work.  I also found on the SNDX system setting the Luma L parameter to 7.5 caused the same slight elevation in black level and on my home system the same thing happened if I set Luma L to 0 ire.  In both cases lowering the Luma L -.1 ire eliminated the black level elevation.  On the SNDX at work a setting of 7.4 worked and on my home system setting luma l to -.1ire worked. 

Needless to say this makes bouncing between home and work problematic as I have to alter the safe color effect parameters between the systems.

This black elevation was noted by QC but only in the black sections of the show as it is so slight it isn't apparent in normal video signals and they didn't reject it but I'm surprised the type of hardware has a back effect as to the actual media Avid is rendering.  Given QC is looking at a file whatever safe color limit effect interaction there is with the type of IO hardware it seems to effect resulting files.

I'm trying to remember which setting had the parameter for adding 7.5 ire to composite out.  I wonder if that would have some effect on this behavior.

I haven't had a chance to bounce back to my 6.5.4 startup disks to see if I can duplicate the behavior in project other than 4K 4096x2160.  Anybody else seeing the slightly elevated blacks in safe color limit effect.  Very annoying.  Maybe it's just in 4K world as I think I would have noticed this behavior over the years.  I have seen strangness in the 7.5ire vs. 0 ire setting before years back but never sussed out what was behind it.

What about something like the M-Audio M-Track series. Perhaps one of their 2x2 USB boxes for $100 - $150. I have an older USB Pre which I use now and again for scratch VO and it has good sound.

Hey Terry, did you ever find a solution to this?  Because we figured buying an expensive DNxIO would solve the problem and it has not.  Exact same issue.  Even on a different computer.  And Avid support is acting like they have never heard of this issue before.  And help would be appreciated.

Might not solve Terry's issue, as he has the DNxIO, and that is slightly different than my UltraStudio Extreme 4K...but different enough to not do what mine can? I'm wondering if our settings in Avid or the BMD settings are different somehow...

I am experiencing the same kind of issues Decklink 4K extreme. I can change the settings in the BM software, but they do nothing while running Media Composer. Also, 4K & UHD only down convert to 2K and once again none of the settings change anything. Makes it useless in a 1080 environment with a 4K project. NitrisDX does do the downconversion to 1080. Haven't tested the DNxIO yet but will try to today.

Not that I agree with it totally, but thats why Adobe is really getting a decent proxy workflow together.  No way a laptop is going to push around all those pixels without having a car battery inside it to run a multiple GPUs.
