Well, the Adrenaline doesn't "down-convert". You would take the down-converted SD out of the deck and capture it SD.

Thanks all. I ran your feedback to the facility. The
sales/scheduling person seemed to think that SD Adrenaline
effectively downconverts during ingest, that's no good.

In my limited experience (on my MC 2.7 which handles HD but does't
monitor HD) I can ingest HD after setting the Proj setting to HD.
Then if I wanted to be able to monitor SD video, I'd have to switch
the proj to SD. In this workflow is that I have not "stepped-on" the
HD footage and compromised it's quality. I can always switch back to
HD and export a Quicktime where my blow-ups will look fine once the
Qt has been downconverted to NTSC.

[Avid-L2] EQ + Rendering bug?

Cross-post ACI-L & Avid-L2

Hey all,

I'm on OS 10.6.4 and MC 5.0.3.5

Anyone else experiencing the following?

1- Huge gain increase following an EQ Tool Effect being rendered. The slider is at the same position but the gain is through the roof. I must then slightly change the gain to un-render it, then render the EQ effect and any dissolves on that segment _separately_. This is a huge, time consuming PITA.

2- When EQ effects are playing RT and there is a cut in the segment (for gain adjustment -- no, I don't like keyframes), I am getting more pops/clicks than I have in the past.

3- Placing a dissolve on a segment with EQ and getting a pop/click which did not have one previously (as mentioned above). Pop is removed only after rendering. Many times I have to re-render the same dissolve (same parameters) to get the click to go away. I mention the same parameters because lengthening, shortening of shifting the position of the transition has no positive effect either.

And while I'm kvetching about audio:
1- There really needs to be an Expert Render for audio. When I do a render I/O, why does it need to re-render audio effects that are already rendered?

Danke... TGIF...!

RE: [Avid-L2] shooting HD for a SD deliverable & facility cost

Definitely edit in HD, then go SD at the end. I was wondering about the blowup, and did a little test. If you add a blowup in a 1080p project and render it, then switch the format to NTSC 23.98, the quality is noticeably better than if you switch it to NTSC and view it real time. It seems that any effect will be applied after the media is downconverted.

So edit in HD and make sure you render everything before you make the SD output so that all the effects are generated in an HD resolution.

I think the matter of blowing up HD for SD is dependent on the project's
destination - how discernible is the audience or the delivery format?

I did just that recently for a web training series. Shot HD, edit in HD, enlarge
to 150% to avoid jumpcuts. It looked fine on the SD monitor, and even better on
the 640x360 flash deliverables.

[Avid-L2] OT slightly: Color Correcting Big Kitties and pushing Saturation?

Working on a show with Tigers in the wild and I find I can really push the saturation on the these big kitties and it looks good.  Once a human gets in the shot I have to pull the saturation back so the flesh tone looks normal.  I'm guessing this is one of the human perceptions of color that we are more in tune with how human flesh tone should look and are more sensitive to saturation of skin tone than we are of kitty saturation.  Does this make sense?  It's been a long week of doubles, shifts that is not beverages, but I did start to think more about this than I should but I have a few pet theories.  I'm trying to figure what factors would account for the Human vs Feline saturation.  Should I suggest to the producers before the next shoot that the talent should sleep 23 hours a day, like a cat, for at least a week before taping?  Or what if it has something to do with always landing on your feet, like a cat.  Should they pre screen potential
talent with a "drop test"?  Oh well at least there only two more work days this week.  Back to the cat farm.  ;-)

Huh? What are you talking about? There's no such thing AFAIK. You have to update any programs that aren't compatible. Just like not all Windows apps that work with XP or Vista will work smoothly with Windows 7.

Also, when you installed SL, did you install the Rosetta option, which is required by some legacy programs. Or am I missing something?

[Avid-L2] Re: shooting HD for a SD deliverable & facility cost

The Adrenaline only impacts your I/O. All processing, playback, effects, etc. is handled by the software. So yes, even with an SD Adrenaline, you can work in HD. You can only see an SD downconvert on your external monitor, unless you have the HD board in the Adrenaline.

If you want to work in HD, but only pay for the SD room, just rent the HD room long enough to capture your footage, then switch to an SD room to do all your work and final output. This gives you HD quality right up until you send out your SD master. And if you wanted to, you could then go back to the HD Adrenaline and output an HD master also.

Re: [Avid-L2] RE: snow leoppard glitches

Usually it is up to the 3rd party software manufacturer to release a patch
unless it is a SL bug which in that case Apple would release it via Software
Update mechanism within OS X.

If it's shot HD, I edit HD. If you're editing in SD, but have access to HD
media, you can run it thru DS or After Effects to do the blowups (HD in an SD
composition) and not lose any resolution. But that method depends on time and
budget constraints.

There's a facility I'd like to work at but I'm guessing they must
have a lot of SD Adrenaline rooms. Their SD room is expensive and
they charge even more for an HD room. The client is shooting HD (DVC
Pro 720p 30fps) for a SD deliverable.

Though everyone *says* it's a SD deliverable, to my mind it's bad
practice to lock into that at the beginning. The second thing is I'm
guessing (and posting this to confirm or disprove) that a SD
Adrenaline MC would not allow you to "access" the HD resolution to
blow-up a shot and not have it fall apart. (Again with near
certainty one is going for a SD deliverable one could normally expand
50% or more to avoid a jump-cut )
