[Avid-L2] Public Beta | MC 2020.2 | macOS Catalina

Public Beta | MC 2020.2 | macOS Catalina
Getting close folks.... You all know that we anticipated releasing a new Media Composer, January 31, 2020 in support of macOS Catalina. Well, the product teams inside Avid wanted more eyes on this release to ensure success so we released a Public Beta yesterday, 1/30/202 for the next 2 weeks.
Why are we doing this?: Given the number of technical changes required to run on macOS Catalina, we want to make certain that Media Composer runs as expected before we do a wide release. While the traditional Beta program will continue to test this release, we wanted to release the beta to a wider customer base to get as much testing and verification as possible to ensure success. All of us who post here from Avid are very happy about this decision and of course this will provide additional internal and external testing, so the foundation of the release will be as solid as possible. We are committed to building upon this release in the months ahead.
Important Information on this Public Beta: As this is a beta release, there are known issues and limitations that you should be aware of prior to installing. We do NOT recommend installing and using this beta release in the middle of a project.
Titling: There is NO Title Tool or Marquee Titler application inside of MC 2020.2 on macOS Catalina. You will be required to use the "new" Titler+ for all titling that is done within the application, so you need to be aware of this BEFORE jumping into the Public Beta pool.
Location for Download: Users who are running macOS Catalina (v.10.15) can download the Media Composer 2020.2 installer from the Avid Download Center and install it. You can Login to your MyAvid Master Account and access the Download Center. The beta release is under (Public Beta).
Support: If anyone experience issues with this software release, they will NOT be able to get support from Avid Customer Success as it is not an officially released software version. However, we have added a new forum to community.avid.com called Public Beta MC 2020.2 | macOS Catalina http://community.avid.com/forums/395.aspx
specifically for this beta and will have Avid personnel monitoring and advising should that be needed. We will also monitor here as well.
Knowledge Base Documents: Avid is providing documentation in support of this beta release. These have been provided to the public via the Download Center and Knowledge Base .
Knowledge Base Documents
- DRAFT - What’s New for Avid Media Composer v2020.2
- Media Composer File Type Limitations on macOS Catalina
How long will the beta run for?: We will run the beta until we officially release Media Composer 2020.2 in mid-February 2020.
What if I’m not on Catalina?: The beta release of Media Composer 2020.2 will install on non-Catalina macOS versions. Users are welcome to use and test this version on non-Catalina systems and provide us with feedback, however the primary focus for this public beta is testing on macOS Catalina.
Important: If you are posting to the Beta Forum, Avid-L2 on Yahoo or AEofFB, please indicate the exact OS being used in the subject line of the post. Best to Post to community.avid.com and the Public Beta forum to ensure your comments are captured.
Do you need a license to run it?: Yes, users will need a license of Media Composer, Media Composer | Ultimate, or Media Composer | Enterprise with either an active subscription or active update and support plan. Alternatively, they can run Media Composer in Trial mode.
Are there limitations or known issues?: Yes. As this is a beta release, there are some known issues and bugs. Additionally, there are known limitations when running on macOS Catalina. I encourage everyone to review the doc's (links above) prior to upgrading and installing.
Questions.... ask away - several of us will be online to answer any questions you might have.
Remember - best to post your issues here:

What does the folder structure look like and what is the extension on the files? Are they MXF?

Doesn’t the HD1500 have an ethernet connection so you can get one of those and have the choice of baseband or file export?

I think they had insert editing via baseband too?

Re: [Avid-L2] Living in the last decade....

We have been doing pretty extensive mastering and camera acquisition with XDCAM for the last ten years, although we're starting to phase it out. The two USB devices, PDW-U1 (USB 2.0) and PDW-U2 (USB 3.0) both work great with Avid, the "Export to XDCAM" works great, you can include captioning in those masters. We also have the PDW-HD1500 deck with SDI in and out. We used to use this deck to batch capture when we were in a proxy workflow- proxies are built in to the XDCAM disc format so it's very easy to use a proxy/hi res workflow. The PDW-U2 are pretty scarce used, while there are quite a few HD1500's for sale used. You may actually be able to find an HD1500 cheaper than a PDW-U2 new price.

Re: [Avid-L2] Living in the last decade....

Hi Tim,
We use an XDCAM workflow and it's pretty smooth. Our method is to export a "master" MXF file from MC to a local drive, and then push this file to XDCAM disc via the PDW-U1. Easy. The PDW creates the proper folder structure on the disc, and the Sony driver gives you direct folder access.

Once the MXF file is on a hard drive, it's just a matter of a file transfer to the PDW, so your pipeline determines your speed. For ballpark figures, a 30-minute program (XDCAM HD 50) is about 13GB on disk and transfers in about 20 minutes. That's with the U1 (USB2). The PDW-U2 is USB3 and will obviously have faster transfer speeds.

Hope this helps.

And, yes, we have great internet here. I've got 5Gb fiber to my

the US! He laughed too, but said Japanese have a deep distrust of

haven't 'delivered' it. Culture -- endlessly fascinating.

Re: [Avid-L2] Living in the last decade....

I don't think so.  I've used multiple U1s at the same time but I'm
pretty sure you can only target one at a time for output from MC.
Depending on what your stations are using to play the XDCAM files, you
could copy the entire XDCAM folder structure to multiple hard drives.
Much cheaper and much faster.  Another option, if the stations are able
to play Sony ProDisks and handle XDCAM files, can they deal with just
plain OP1a MXF files with XDCAM50 essence? --J.B. (who also has HDCAM
tape deliverables :-( )

Re: [Avid-L2] Living in the last decade....

John,

Interesting... makes me wonder if I could attach, say, 3 PDW-U1s
to the computer and get three programs "dubbed" at the same time.
That ought to be faster than what we're doing now -- 13 digital
cuts to HDCAM tape, one for each station.

Re: [Avid-L2] Living in the last decade....

Export to the U2 drive works well. Remember to make an audio mixdown on tracks 1 and 2, since the first four audio tracks go to disc.  You can even open the disc folder on the desktop and drill down into the "Clip" folder to check that the clip is complete on the disc.  I can send you the instructions I have used with our editors if you are interested in seeing that.

Export to Device works fine. Glad the PDW-U2 is USB3. In fact, if you take any storage drive and replace the contents with a copy of an XDCAM folder structure, you can export to that, too. Good for testing. Linking to XDCAM is pretty smooth, too.

Several years back someone gave me the tip that you can export an XDCam file and with the proper sony driver so you see the xdcam icon for the drive you can just drag the exported file to the disk.  I can't recall if it was drag it to the contents folder or something and the disk driver would do the work to make it a playable file on the drive without having to export to device or whatever the proper term was.  At the time we were delivering XDCam disks to a truck for a live show and it worked very well.

Re: [Avid-L2] Importing Sony files in 2019.12

Make sure any old Sony plugins have been uninstalled

The nablet XAVC XDCAM Plug-in is the successor of the former Sony PDZK-MA2 plug-in. Note that the nablet plug-in and the Sony plug-in cannot coexist on the same system. The installation of the nablet plug-in guarantees a seamless transition* in your XAVC XDCAM editing workflow after the Sony plug- in had been uninstalled.

*Note that clips in an editing project which have previously been linked by the Sony plug-in will show same plug-in name in the bins clip info although the nablet plug-in now handles them. This is because the Avid application stored the initial information persistently.

Note: The nablet plug-ins and the legacy Sony plug-ins cannot coexist on the same system. Having them both installed will result in unpredictable behaviors of the editing application.

[Avid-L2] Media Composer 2018.12.10 Launching Today

Media Composer 2018.12.10 Launching Today

Today, January 28,2020 at 12:00 noon ET, we will launch a Media Composer (2018.12.10).  This will be available on the Download Center at launch.

ReadMe: I have attached the current ReadMe to this Alert.   Nora will upload this document to the Media Composer 2018 Documentation page at launch.

IMPORTANT INSTALLER INFO (Windows) Both a full installer and a patch installer are provided for Media Composer v2018.12.10.  To use the patch, you must have v2018.12.3 already installed. Then use the 2018.12.10 patch to update to v2018.12.10.

Note: that many users are asking about Catalina support in the future for use with with the long Long Term Maintenance Release 2018.x.   Avid will NOT approve nor test Catalina on any 2018.x versions due to the extensive work to remove a lot of 32-bit code and making large changes that could have adverse effects on users who rely on 2018.12.x.

What’s fixed in 2018.12.10:

The following has been fixed.

  • Bug Number: MCCET-3449. You might have experienced issues when working with Dynamic
Relink and relinking between high and proxy resolutions. In some instances, the resolution did
not successfully update to the requested resolution.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3398. In some instances, working with the Stabilize effect resulted in an
    “Access Violation” error.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3079. If Run Length Endcoded (RLE) was enabled in the Import
Settings (Image tab) imported graphics displayed WRONG FORMAT.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3289. Using the Find Script button might have highlighted an entire
selection in the script rather than just the line with the script marker on it.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3419. If Dupe Detection was enabled, you might have received an
“Exception: CORE_SEGMENT_NOT_FOUND” error when moving the audio clip to another
audio track using the Segment tool.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3071. Intermittently, Media Composer would hang when you exited the
application. This is fixed with NVIDIA driver v441.28.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3332. AAF exports from Media Composer v2018.12.8 and v2019.9 did
    not import into Pro Tools.
  • Bug Number: MCCET-3262. In some instances, when loading media that had been transcoded
using Distributed Processing transcode into the Source monitor, Media Composer crashed

Re: [Avid-L2] Upcut audio

Replying to Greg's Q, I noticed that when MC First first appeared, there was a delay in audio response when hitting 'Play' - and I'm sure I've sometimes seen this in the full version. Backing up a second before the start of an audio clip fixed it. Anyone else chip in on this?

I believe the term came from radio, but its been in my vocabulary as long as I can remember.

In my particular case, I mean that the first little bit of audio in the timeline is missing from the mixdown.  Its inconsistent, but usually about a second of dialog. Not across all tracks.  As if ine track was 'turned on' late.  If I put a region of silence in the track earlier in the timeline (rather than nothing) the problem goes away.

Re: [Avid-L2] Editing tutorial footage

This would certainly be a lot more extensive and fun than most tutorial footage to work with.  The link to the review is from 2012.  Is that the last time the book was updated?  I noticed some of the comments in the review refer to outdated information, such as Premiere being limited to 4 cameras in multi cam.

Hi, Everyone! It's been a while but I saw this regarding tutorial footage and wanted to mention some good multicamera footage that is packaged on a dvd with my book. (not intending to be self-promoting).

There are two sets of platform agnostic multicamera footage included in 720p 23.98. The first one is about 20 angles of "Band on the Run" from a Paul McCartney show I cut. It is from two separate nights with 12 cameras each night. We swapped out positions and lenses the second night for unique angles and the band wore the same clothes and played to a click. You can group each night separately or group them both together and cut between the two shows as one. I also include the final mix to practice audio layback. There is also a 5 camera set with Elton John doing "Love Lies Bleeding".

It's all licensed for educational purposes so, please don't post your cuts anywhere or it will get flagged and pulled.

Anyway the book is a little pricey ($58) but, I'm told it's worth it for the camera footage alone and there are some great stories, history and techniques too... Here is a link to a review from the Editors Guild CineMontage magazine and I hope this helps in your training.

Re: [Avid-L2] Upcut audio

I’ve had this on an export- missing start of dialogue - on 2019.9 I think. Clip was AMA linked.

Workaround was to do audio mixdown.
