[Avid-L2] Recommendations for upgrading GPU on MacPro 2010

I have a MacPro 2010 5,1 3.33Mhz 2x6 cores, 48GB RAM still running El Capitan and MC 8.10.
Just paid for a BCC upgrade only to find out that I need at least Sierra or High Sierra for that.  Since I'm about to take the plunge and do the dreaded "fix what ain't broken" path, I'm also considering upgrading my current GPU (Radeon 5770 1GB) to a Radeon RX 580 8GB so I can install Mojave.  And, at some point to update to MC 2019 as well.  I'm not in a position to go with a new computer, but can handle the $350 or so for a new GPU.
So I'd like to know if anyone has any advice regarding:
1.  If I just move to High Sierra, will I see any value in changing the GPU to the Radeon RX 580?
2.  Any advantage in running MC on Mojave vs. High Sierra?
3.  Any compatibility issues with my system when I move up to MC2019?
Note: I also use After Effects and Media Encoder - the new GPU might help there, but with 1080 media I mostly edit with, I'm fine with the performance I'm currently getting.
Suggestions welcome! Thanks in advance.
Craig

Re: [Avid-L2] AVID export to FLIX with animation fails

You could try duplicating the sequence and doing a video Mixdown and replace the VFXs with it. That would make the sequence "AAF friendly" for third parties.

Creating QT's of those panels is time consuming.

Is there a way to render or export the .aaf so that the animation effects looks flattened (Non-destructive) to Flix so it will work?

Re: [Avid-L2] AVID export to FLIX with animation fails

No.  Avid effects are unique to Avid.  Other software won't understand it.
This is probably true of any NLEs AAF export, unfortunately.

Re: [Avid-L2] Are new Mac's that ship with Catalina downgradeble to Mojave or High Sierra?

Ok.  The older 2013 iMacs have a M.2 slot on the logic board unused.       You can put a 512 M.2 (The Apple version) Swap out the HDD to 4 TB enterprise drive and be good for some years.

Good luck

Re: [Avid-L2] Help! Offline Clips #Avid

Usually, in an Interplay environment, the Avid media on shared storage (ISIS, NEXIS) is indexed by Interplay media indexers. Local storage is indexed by Media Composer through MDB files in the MXF folders. Linked media is handled by AMA. Those are all separate and different. Usually, if ISIS media is online when it is first brought in, then goes offline after a restart, it's a sign that the storage location is not properly configured in the Media Indexers.   That will require attention from your Interplay admin.  If the local media is going off line, it's worth checking to see if the folder is properly named and if the media database files are rebuilding properly.  Normally, the MDB files will have a time stamp that is the same as the last time media was added or deleted. 64 GB memory

We are working with a new Windows installation and a new Avid installation.

Our usual workflow for daily editing is a small local server running Interplay. Everything in this workflow was working fine.

Now for a 40-min documentary edit we have added an external USB 3.0 hard disk with all of our extra footage. Mostly shot on either P2 or Sony Alpha. MXF files. We need to edit both from this external drive and from existing footage on Interplay.

The edit starts normally, all footage visible. But during editing we are suddenly getting clips going offline. These are clips located on the USB 3.0 harddisk. In most cases we can use match frame from an "offline" clip and then find bin and suddenly the material appears again. But we have one sequence which stays offline completely.

We are (of course) under time constraints.

We have tried to dump the database files and restart and that did seem to decrease the issue initially but it has come back.

We are trying to make sure that the external drive isn't sleeping at the Windows level. Maybe that could cause the problem? But why just one sequence? we also had clips where PART of the clip was offline and part was online.

We tried to consolidate the sequence but this new system would only consolidate a few clips and then stop.

Now we have moved the project to a travel edit laptop and are consolidating there on a different external drive. We don't have room to move the whole raw material to the local hard drive on to the server.

We are also going to try to open a new project and bring the bins over, to see whether it's the new Avid version causing problems... though we had no problems with the new version and our Interplay workflows.

I looked in the archive but couldn't find anything similar.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Josh

Re: [Avid-L2] Are new Mac's that ship with Catalina downgradeble to Mojave or High Sierra?

The oldest OS a modern Mac will run is the OS it came with it during its initial release. For MP2019, that would be OS 15.x. So "no" to your question.

You should be able to Bootcamp via Catalina.

Apple lost the plot some time ago and the trash can was the wrong direction. Plus they suffered thermal issues when worked hard.
At the same time the Dell and HP workstations have really cracked it as workhorses.
Then you have the Mac OS issues and now dropping 32 bit.

PC everytine for me. I use Macs when I have to but I now find them Frustratingly limited.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac local storage for Avid media recommendations

"my default setting"  are you talking about site settings, mc State or what.  User settings work so that's good.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac local storage for Avid media recommendations

Interesting.  Thanks for the tip!  Another good reason not to allow your edit systems to be connected to the internet.

Although QNAP systems are probably designed to be internet servers, you don't have to use them that way.

Seems like a good time to run those updates, though??

Pardon my ignorance but: Should not at least MC be able to tell the difference in order to properly handle the whole idea of shared storage?

Hi Job,
Define 'ignorance'.
And define 'shared storage'.
What I ment:
In the dark ages, Avid would not use drives that were not 'Avid'.
Then the red baret brigade got the best of Avid, and Avid changed the policy, with the console 'alldrives' command.
Then, something else (memory fails here) network drives became supported.
However, there is still a difference. (Others, feel free to chime in here!)

Now, the only thing I 'think' is the case:
If you use an Iscsi mounted network drive, MC cannot / should not know the difference.
(I have no clue why you (have) spent a shitload of money on ISIS…)

For 'shared storage':
If multiple workstations work with the same media and the MDB's have to be updated / refreshed, it's different.
But, I don't think you get bitten by this kind / type of workflow issues, since you only do long form.
