Re: [Avid-L2] .scc files from REV.com don't open in Media Composer

I have used REV.COM several times for closed captioning.  They do a very good job in my opinion. They adjust position for lower 3rds, they will use information from a previously used lower 3rd to identify a speaker that is talking behind b-roll. I will definitely use them again in the future!

First, for 1 dollar a minute it's not great value, it's dirt cheap, and I can't imagine it has any quality.

I charge 1 dollar a minute just to watch something.
(We had this discussion before.)

Now, for your problem:
I take it rev.com sends you a zip file.
Did you unzip that on your avid? Things may be messed up if you mail an unzipped file.

If that does not work, can you mail me an example? (It has been years since I've touched my SCC code, but it's still there.)

So, I don't know if anyone's run into this - we've started using REV.com to generate closed caption files - it's a great value! However, the .scc files from REV don't open in Media Composer. However, until recently, you could simply open the REV version of the .scc file in Premiere, then export it again - sort of 'washing' the file through premiere - and that resulting file opens as expected in Media Composer. The latest version of Premiere, however doesn't export .scc files, consequently this trick no longer works.

Anyone know why .scc files from REV.com don't open in Media Composer? Is there a way to edit/tweak/convert them without using Premiere (or some more expensive piece of software?) I wonder if the problem is on the REV side or the Avid side. It would be great to fix this! Maybe the next version of Media Composer could accept .srt files or something, too - that would be great.

Thoughts?

Re: [Avid-L2] .scc files from REV.com don't open in Media Composer

Thanks for launching there, Bouke…

A) Do NOT mix up subtitles with captions. Those are two different things.

Yep, I know, should have clarified. What I really want is both:
- Closed Caption from this English dialog interview
- AND an English (American flavor) subtitle in the .vtt format

B) You are 'Thinking' about getting yourself into a HUGE ADVENTURE about spending a WHOPPING 55 USD on a job with the most cheap company I've ever heard of?
(And no, you won't be submitting English, you will be submitting Americanish)

Well, already had that big, hair-pulling adventure a while back with subtitles on the last feature project. Getting friends to translate languages into subtitles (never again), which I then had to completely re-do in the powerful-but-obscure, no-manual app Annotation Edit…which was fine once learned… Anyway, I just want a base-line transcription of the American English spoken in a subtitle file and then send it out to a very professional translation company and pay properly to have them give me a suite of translations: French, Portuguese-Brazilian, Spanish-Latin-American, and Italian.

C) So you want to have a dirt cheap translation / transcription translated to another language, thus putting mistake on mistake, and you want that as cheap as possible?

Well no, Bouke, I was looking to take the cheap English transcription subtitle (or create one from the caption file) and the lay it into either MC or Annotation edit and correct it as needed, until it is as perfect as can be, in terms of actual language spoken and the timing of it on screen, and of course meeting the character-line spec for subtitles.

Oh, you did shoot at least 4K HDR on an ARRI in some difficult LOG format, did you not?

You got me there, in that it's not 4K HDR on an Arri. It is HD ProRes 422 HQ. But it looks reeeeeeally good, and was lit, lensed, and mic'd professionally rather well, if I may say. And the subject matter is fascinating, particularly to an underserved audience, which is what I hope will attract attention for licensing.

(Otherwise it makes no sense to have it translated, people will refuse to watch it anyways since it thus sucks big time, as you were too cheap to shoot properly.)

That ain't the case, compadre.

I don't think you want my advice on your workflow, but you get the general idea anyways.

Thanks for fueling the conversation.

Advice still welcome… as always from the brain-trust of this venerated forum...

No worries, I'll make the .scc fly if it fails.

Very kind of you, thanks!

I have the Annotation Edit app and might be able to use that to get a clean .scc export that will import into MC. ??

Any advice or thoughts on this subtitle workflow are most welcome.
