Recently a place I worked at for a long time bought a used Sony X310, it only had 27 hours on it according to the calibration technician, but she could only get 877 nits even with the white patch down to 5%. It was the first X310 she had calibrated and she thought it might be a limit of the panel. I recall the ECinema monitors would have to be very selective of the backlight elements they used to make sure they were bright enough. IIRC many of the same back light elements didn't have the output necessary so they couldn't be used in their displays. I wonder if there is a similar variance with the X310 Sony LEDs. For 20K I'd expect to get the full 1000 nits especially on a 5% patch. I realize the difference between 877 and 1000 nits isn't much to the human eye but 20K sure is a difference to my pocket book. Oh wait I just googled and B&H is listing the X310 at $29K. Wow I guess that's another victim of the supply chain. On Thu, May 19, 2022 at 07:08 PM, Mark Spano wrote:
Yes that's the one. Between the 42" C2 and this 34" Alienware, the smaller format "cheap" monitors are covered. I can't possibly see what the 32" LG Pro monitor would do that would be worth the extra $2500 or so.None of these will do peak brightness on a full screen higher than around 200 nits. Is it even necessary for most mastering? They will hit above 800 nits for a 10% window, which I think is more than adequate for a non-reference HDR monitor.

It's nuts to me that anyone would go this route when the 42" C2 and the 32" Alienware are available at way lower prices. Don't make the mistake of thinking this is a "pro" HDR monitor in the lane of FSI or Sony.

I would assume it could be calibrated similar to the C7 and on models with Calman software but I don't know any specifics. I'm just curious. I don't like the high stand it comes on but I hope it has vesa mounts or a way to lower it on the stand.John Moore Barking Trout Productions Studio City, CA bigfish@pacbell.net
