Thanks Karl - I used your Rescue Pro Deluxe but it can only retrieve files off a mounted disk and I can't get the USB disk to mount, or even appear in Disk Utility.

Fortunately, I am informed that not much is lost with it, but it would have been nice to find a programme that could mine it's way through the USB bus and find the disc and enable it to mount... or am I being unrealistically optimistic?
