So some progress...

On the HD side, there is a new Follow Input checkbox on the AJA Control Room Format tab that overrides any changes you make. Once you click back in to Avid, it will revert to the format of the incoming signal. You can watch it change, wacky. The fix is to disable the AJA hardware in Avid, de-select the box in the AJA software and then re-enable. Basically the AJA card was providing Avid with an SD signal when it was set to HD. Unchecked the box and all is well...for up conversion. (Thanks to Dawn in AJA tech support!)

The challenge on the SD side is still unresolved (although the customer is fine with just upconverting). When the AJA Kona LHi + BOB is presented with a signal from the Betacam deck it is black and white in the Avid interface. The underlying file is still in color when you play it back out via SDI or export it. Just within Avid. I tried Component and Composite via the Kona, as well as a BMD Analog to SDI converter then connected to the Kona and all resulted in black and white playback within Avid. Tried both flavors of Component in the AJA Control Room. Also tried an alternative reference generator.

I'm going to look at some sample files on another Avid system tomorrow.

Good luck with this. I'll add one quick note from Ted Churchill's 1980 "Steadicam Operator's Manual of Style." In the chapter on maintenance, Ted wrote, "...the problem is always in a cable." Forty years later, Ted's advice still proves to be correct in a lot of cases. Definitely wiggle all those component video cables and make sure they're making good contact. --J.B.
