I did notice in MXF folders, the usual numbers.
However, a folder labeled __bg.1
Is this indicative of background processing, or something
that shouldn't be there?

Move the sequences to a new bin and restart Media Composer.
You can also try RepairSequences in the console.
If none of this work. Hide the Avid MediaFiles folder by adding a letter to its name and create a title, saving it to the drive in question. It should create a new Avid MediaFiles folder with a #1 folder inside.. Then drag all the media to that new #1 folder. Then let the .mdb and .pmr files get recreated.
Good luck.

Some of the MXF media appears to be offline/missing.
I guess the question becomes, how do I reconnect the MXF media I still have.
And recreate the MXF missing clips from original cam files,
so sequences are all online.
I have been away from Avid awhile, this project has been done in fits and starts,
according to the producers finances. This came to of the blue this weekend.
Everything displayed properly until then.
