Thanks for the AAF idea, Jay, this is actually pretty close to what I was asking for. As you suggested the media structure is not ideal on these workspaces- lots of projects all mixed together in a common workspace.

I mean the first thing is to do up front media management. Separate Nexis workspaces for Pre_Pro media, Production media, Post Media, VFX media, Render Media, etc. That probably doesn't help you much right now if you haven't already done that though.
So, I would suggest AAF exports. Select objects in bins and export with copy media to separate folder to your external portable drive. Once you 'think' you are done then unmount the Nexis workspaces and see if everything relinks to your external portable drive. The is basically the same process I use if I want to send media with someone for just a particular scene, or if I am working with a remote production and we are swapping bins back and forth. I'll get the new bin, flip it to show reference clips. Pull anything that is offline to another bin and send it to the other team. They do a AAF export to separate folder and send me the missing media.

Consolidating will get the job done but is messy because it creates two copies of all of the source clips, and can be very time consuming to do for large camera isos; for sequences consolidate works well.
As an example, I'm on a NEXIS/Interplay system now where we need to delete some workspaces from a workgroup; for a large active project on the system, I'd like to be able to collect its MXF files and organise them on a workspace by workspace basis. Basically a function similar to "Collect Files for Project" in After Effects.

Neither one specifically mentions Avid MXF folders in their descriptions. Anyone have any experience with either of these? Or, does anyone have other software that can collect Avid media (without consolidating)?
