Re: [Avid-L2] APFS VS. HFS+?

After spending some more quality time and copying the contents off the OWC 24TB drive to a couple HFS+ Western Digital Red Raw drives and 8 TB and a 6TB I have found that when clicking on a DPX folder with a large number of DPX files from a 50+ minute show that the HFS+ raw drive in a craddle displays the contents in the column to the right approximately 5  or more time faster.  I clicked on the folder on the raw drive and I could see all the individual files in less that a minute.  Clicking on the same folder on the OWC drive, which has two raided drives in it and it took around 5 minutes to see the files pop up in the column to the right.  Also copying from the OWC to the Raw drive initially with the 1.66TB folder of DPX image sequence it took several minutes of preparing to copy but now that I have reformated the OWC to HFS+ copying back from the Raw Drive started within about 20 seconds after the dragging the folder back.  The OWC original only had about 8TB of content on the 24 TB raid so I don't think there was much fragmentation as it was just shuttling another projects DPX folders for upload.

In my googles I did read some that said copying took much longer with APFS volumes but others said it would handle many tasks under the hood better and faster because of how it tracked metadata for things like Get Info.  So far I'm seeing worse performance but I'm on a 27 inch late 2013 iMac so maybe it's frimware/hardware does not take as much advantage of this new disk format.  Also these are not SSD drives and in reading it said SSDs should work better with APFS.  Also it said if you upgrade an SSD startup drive to High Sierra it will be automatically converted from HFS+ to APFS if it is an SSD.  Fusion and Magnetic drives will not be converted.  In the case of this iMac it did not convert the startup drive to APFS.

So my very limited world seems to work better with HFS+ for now.  Anybody got any more experience or suggestions regarding APFS and performance/compatibility?
