I did some digging and 2018.5 is considered a legacy version due to the recent changes that we have in our licensing scheme. This means that all new purchases can only run from version 2018.9 and up, this is for software licensing. If you need to run versions prior to 2018.9, they will need to use a software dongle.
My 8.5.3 license was an educational license, which has since expired.
This may have had something to do with my options, going forward.

Hi Chip,
1. Depending on how you had your licensing, 2018.5 "requiring a dongle" may be incorrect. With perpetual license, I have been able to go back all the way to before Avid MC 5.5.5, if need be. This was a dongle license, but was converted to an Internet connection license, when I moved my dongle to perpetual on a different machine.
2. Again, depending on your licensing, 2018.12.3 and 2018.12.9 have been good; as well as 2018.11. Before that, 2018.9 was pretty stable in my situation.
