Re: [Avid-L2] GTX-680 Mac OS driver vs. Nvidia Driver?

On my home system I found out the hard way that even though I installed the correct driver initially to get the Titan X cards to be properly recognized after later updating things including the OS Mac just defaulted to the OS driver for the GTX-680 without me noticing any prompt.  Unfortunately the stock drive worked with the 680 but left the TitanX gpus in limbo.  I couldn't understand why Resolve was just vaporizing with my 4K test projects.  Then I discovered I need to update the nvidia driver and choose it over the stock driver.

I think I had perhaps missed a prompt along the upgrade path that probably warned me to update nvidia or it would revert to stock driver.

I got it in and it's working now.  I guess there is no real reason to find the nvidia driver but I might just for the heck of it.  "If it's stuck, force it!  If it breaks it needed replacement anyway!!"  I recall that was one of our maintenance engineer mottos when I started at ABC.  Of course in my case it was, "If it breaks let somebody else fix it."  ;-)  Did I mention I held the title for "Maintenance Induced Errors" back in the day?

I used to have a 680.  My experience is that it made no difference to use the Nvidia web driver. ...maybe even less stable than the stock MacOS driver.   It was a couple of years back, so maybe the instability was specific to that driver build.  I went back to using the Mac supplied driver and didn't bother to find out.   I replaced the card with an AMD Pulse since going to Mojave.

I'm swapping out a radeon 5770 GPU with a GTX-680 from another computer at work.  I know there are better gpus now but this is what we have in house.  I know Mac OS has internal support for GTX-680.  On my home system I have a GTX-680 in the tower and two titan X cards in an expansion chassis.  At home I got the right nvidia driver for my build so that the TitanX cards would be correctly recognized.

At work it's just a tower so I know I can just run the internal os driver but is there any advantage to finding the correct nvidia driver for this build.  Just curious if the nvidia driver has any benifit in a single gpu setup like I have at work.
