Re: [Avid-L2] Avid DPX exports time estimate and storage options?

The core question is why the 20TB Graid performs so much better than an empty 4TB Graid.  On older versions of Avid I didn't see this behavior.  I've now seen this behavior on 3 4TB Graids.  I would think all the Graid drives have similar hardware raid controllers it's just the size of the drives that put in the enclosure.

So even if it's multiple nibbles why the difference between different size Graids?  The only other thing that comes to my mind is the 20TB is newer hardware.  But this doesn't answer why I didn't notice this behavior on earlier versions.

In the past pre 2018 Avid versions I've even gone to a single raw drive in a voyager dock and that was faster taking around 9 hours.

Today I'm testing exporting to a single 4TB raw drive in a cheap 20 dollar usb3 dock I got at Fry's a month ago and Avid estimating 8 Hours and 30 ish minutes..  That's approx half what it took to export the DPX to the 4TB Graid.

Clearly there is something different in all 3 4TB Graids I've tried compared to the 20TB Graid and now even a raw drive.  I'm not sure how old the 4TB Graids are but that's the only thing I can think of at this point.  I'm not thinking it's old worn out drives but old hardware/firmware in the Graid enclosures.  Even when I exported to the 20TB drive with only 400GB of frees space the time estimate was around 7 hours so it wouldn't appear to be related to how much free space is on the drive.

So what kind of variances in Graid hardware/firmware could there be.  Is it something to do with chunk size etc...?  I assume the Black Magic Disk speed test is valid but is it testing in a manner that is less representative of a DPX export?

So many silly questions.  I have to keep things simple and a faster drive would logically perform better in my mind but as you say the nibble factor may be in play.  I know ProTools with more but smaller files has had issues with storage optimized for video I wonder if there is something like this going on?  But then why the difference between the 20TB and 4TB Graids.  I'm entering an infinite loop between my ears!!!  ;-)

My guess would be its not Raw drive speed. DPX export is lots of file creations. So it multiple nibbles of data rather than hosing data at the storage.
