Oh, that's not good. My 17" would boot to Hardware Test even if the battery were disconnected from the motherboard and all it had was external. I don't have it with me at the moment or I would try booting to hardware test without the RAM installed. I'm not sure if it would do that.
But at 5 years old I wonder if your laptop is one of the newer type that had everything soldered to the board. Which really limits options.
