I just went through similar situation with my MacBookPro 2009. It was problematic booting. It would start to boot (the front edge light on the right would come on brite and then dim, then after a few seconds the light and the computer would die. Repeated attempts would sometimes get to the boot chime. Then during the rest of the boot it may or may not die before a full start up
I found my battery, the original one, to be in need of service. I replaced it but the problem persisted. A tech we use gave me a link to a Reballing Service with a sale for the 2009 MacBookPro. For less than 200 bucks they fix the GPU problems. I contacted them and they said in their experience the boot problem is likely a byproduct of the gpu issues these units are know for. Bottom line I mailed them my laptop without hard drive and no power converter on a Thursday. The next Wednesday the laptop was back and working with consistent boots.
I asked the support person if this process involved reapplying the thermal paste and he said yes. Now I still notice when my macbook runs a while it's processing seems to stall for a minute or two. I notice if firefox is open and iTunes playing sometimes iTunes just stops playing and after a minute or two it will pick up playing where it left off. Similarly sometimes playing videos they will start to stutter or freeze. For years I've just been running the lower performance gpu to partially eliminate the stalls. I always thought it was thermal in nature but I don't really know.

I don't know if this is the same thing but I had an issue with an old i7 Macbook Pro that would die without mains power, and would only work for about 10mins even with mains power (and the light showed green on the power connector).
Turned out to be a known issue with the graphics card and short of replacing it, the workaround was to install gfxcardstatus (https://gfx.io) and tell the Mac to only ever use the internal card.
However this obviously requires you to be fully booted up for a few minutes at least otherwise you can't install it.
