Re: [Avid-L2] Achieving Proper CMode Sort in Resolve from Avid AAF?

I really can't tell you exactly what is going on, since I work for neither company, but the way things 'could' be:

Most metadata I've seen so far have not only a UMID, but also a file history, and / or Parent.
So, when creating a proxy, the proxy gets a new UMID, but also info on where it was made from. (Makes sense, not?)
Then, it is of course very easy to say in an AAF (what is a format that I don't speak!) 'use Original, if not found, use Proxy'

After that there is more logic that 'could' be implemented by the coders, like (in pseudo code)

If UMID matches Clip
use clip
else
Check SecondUMID
if SecondUMID matches clip
use clip
else
If Reelname / filename / timecode / whatever matches
use clip
end if

It all depends on the logic of the coders. (Where the ones from FCP < X lacked any Vulcan blood, and the ones from BM have funny ears and can press "QW" and "OP" with one hand.)
(For our French listers, that is on a QWERTY board..)

UMID's are great. Seeing a Resolve session instantly link to originals is a joy! (After years of Avid cursing…)
But sadly you need to know what files have them, and what not.
(Where of course the ones without get renamed / moved / changed all the time, while the 'good' ones stay in their proper place with proper name…)

This if very informative stuff.  Here's where I get confused if it's working on UMID's.  I have two Avid sequences one that was linked to camera original and one that was linked to camera original transcode to DNxHRHQX from an ama link.  In Avid I can relink to either the transcoded media or the camera original because I never added a tape name the file path is maintained.  So is Avid tracking the ama link etc... using UMID's?

Given the 2nd Avid sequence was pointing to consolidated with handles clips of the original single camera clip do all the consolidated clips maintain the same UMID that the original single clip had?  Given Resolve is able to link either sequence that is aff'd into Resolve from Avid to the Camera original that was imported into Resolve prior to importing the aaf's that would have to be the case wouldn't it?

I think I need to go back into avid and display the UMID column to see if the consolidated clips have a matching UMID to the original Camera clip.

Another thing I found was there are two production logos at the end of the sequence which came from two different files.  I brought one of the files into Resolve prior to bringing in the aaf.  I didn't have access to one of the production logo files but what happened was Resolve put the one logo I preimported into the sequence correctly but it also put the same file in the other production logo spot.  Not sure why it didn't just leave the other production logo offline.  Seems Avid imported clips play by different rules.

I don't quite know how Resolve links when there are no tape name/reel numbers but it did work.

AFAIK, Resolve links to UMID's. Unique Media IDentifiers.
A series of chars/digits guaranteed to be unique in the world. (eg, location info / time info / cam serial number, no way two cams with the same serial number shoot at the same place at the exact same time.)

This is why you have to tell Resolve where the media of your project is. It creates a database of all the UMID's, and cross matches that with the AAF.
So (I never tested), you should be able to rename whatever you like, it would not make a difference.
Most pro cams write an UMID, so do most sound recorders. (And if not, you can promote those files to BWF using my BWF toolbox, that will add a UMID besides other metadata)

Now, this is probably a problem with 'bare' AE renders from old versions and clips from cheap cams.
You can have two problems:
1) there is a UMID, and you overwrite the source with an exact same length / name fresh render (cause you found a typo in the credits), it might NOT link as there is a new UMID.
2) there is NO UMID, so Resolve must fall back to older methods, and those 'might' fail.

Thinking of it, I can add XMP metadata to close all material, and XMP is capable of writing an UMID.

So, if anyone has these kind of linking trouble, contact me and I cook something.
