Due to licensing reasons, Avid will be updating Media Composer licenses and subscriptions, which will impact the software versions that they can run. Beginning May 30th, 2019, new perpetual and subscription licenses will only be able to run Media Composer 2018.9 or higher. In addition, existing subscriptions will only be able to run Media Composer 2018.9 or higher upon renewal. Please review the below for more information*
What's happening?- On May 30th, 2019, Avid will begin selling perpetual software licenses and subscriptions of Media Composer that will only run v2018.9 or later. In addition, when an existing subscription (a subscription started before May 30th, 2019) is renewed, it will also only run v2018.9 or later.
Why is this change happening?- Due to licensing reasons, Avid can no longer sell new perpetual or subscription licenses that run older software versions. This license agreement also extends to subscription renewals.
What does this mean for existing licenses?- Perpetual software licenses purchased and activated prior to May 30th, 2019 will experience no change in software version support.
- A Media Composer perpetual dongle and software licenses with an Active Update & Support Plan will still be able to run any software version they were able to run prior to May 30th, 2019. Renewals of perpetual license Update & Support Plans after May 30th, 2019 will still be able to run any software version they were able to run prior to renewal
- Subscription licenses purchased and activated prior to May 30th, 2019 will only be able to run v2018.9 or higher upon their first renewal after May 30th, 2019
- An active Media Composer subscription will still be able to run previous versions until the subscription is renewed.
- Once the subscription is renewed – as part of either an annual renewal or a month-to-month renewal – then they will only be able to run 2018.9 or higher.
- A Media Composer subscription customer with an expired subscription will not be able to run any version of Media Composer (because their subscription is expired).
What about new licenses purchased after May 30th, 2019? What versions of Media Composer can they run?- New perpetual software licenses of Media Composer purchased and activated after May 30th, 2019 will be able to run 2018.9 and higher.
- New perpetual dongle licenses of Media Composer purchased and activated after May 30th, 2019 will continue to run software versions prior to 2018.9 – there will be no change to new perpetual dongles at this time.
- New subscription licenses of Media Composer purchased and activated after May 30th, 2019 will be able to run 2018.9 and higher.
What if I purchased a perpetual license or subscription before May 30 but did not activate it (register it in a My Avid account) until after May 30?- Perpetual licenses purchased before May 30th, 2019 will still be able to run prior versions of Media Composer, regardless of when it is activated (registered in a MyAvid account)
- Subscriptions purchased before May 30th, 2019 but activated and started (registered in a MyAvid account) after May 30th, 2019 will only be able to run v2018.9 or higher
What if I need to run a version of Media Composer prior to 2018.9? What do I do?- Customers that know that they will need to run a version of Media Composer prior to 2018.9 should do the following:
- If they are using an annual paid up front or annual paid monthly subscription license, they should ensure that they renew their subscription before May 30th, 2019. This will allow them to run their desired version until their renewed subscription is up. Subscriptions can be renewed at any time before their renewal date.
- If they are using a monthly subscription license, then they will need to either purchase a new subscription paid up front or a new perpetual license and activate it before May 30th
- If they are using a perpetual dongle or software license, they will not have to take any action provided it's activated prior to May 30th, 2019
- If they intend to buy a new license after May 30th, 2019, they will need to buy a perpetual dongle license.
