Almost certainly not. Moving up is normally OK and moving down can work if you have the right point update installed but even then it's normally only a version or two back you can go.
So he either lugs his system or moves to the current version permentantly. Note he'll find the new versions since 8.5 to have different menu layouts so that will slow him.
