I have some Panasonic AVC-Intra YUV 4:2:2 10 bit media. We use this all the time and it is always shot in Panny V-Log. This has always worked well with the VLog to Rec 709 that is available on Panasonic website.
Now I have media that has an accompanying CDL files. As far as I know I can't import the CDL files into the color management of Avid. I tried and get an error. But when I ama link Avid automatically puts a CDL into the Color Transformation column that effect the video just like a LUT would. In color management preferences you can turn of the auto assignment of LUTs and there is also a similar checkbox for bringing in CDL info. After bringing in the first A camera media I noticed what was happening so I turn off the check box and then linked to the B camera but still the CDL infor was applied. That doesn't seem correct to me.
The CDL info shows up as numbers in ( )'s followed by a comma then Panasonic V-LUT. So there are two elements in play. First is a CDL info, which I assume is something they came up with on set to feed the standard V-Log Rec 709 LUT, and then the Panasonic V-LUT. I can strip all this out and apply my standard VLog LUT and it looks good. The CDL info is kind of whacked out. It's not horrible in overall level but it's very greenish on the flesh tones. It is certainly not a look that was intended. I deleted the CDL parameters and just left the V-LUT in the color transform and the level changes slightly but stays the greenish look. If I delete the Panasonic V-LUT the level is much more normal but washed out as would be expected.
I'm wondering given I can't import a CDL file into the color management window why does the CDL info come in through an ama link? I assume there is metadata with the files that is bringing it along. Perhaps some different software was used in the field to create the CDL files? I'm just guessing. I find it strange the what is listed as Panasonic V-LUT in the CDL Color Transformation doesn't seem to work at all like the normal Vlog to Rec 709. My limited knowledge of CDL info is it's sort of the aaf of passing color info along. Could Avid be misinterpreting the CDL version of a Panasonic V-LUT?
Also why does Avid still automatically apply the CDL info to Color Tranform column when I have unchecked that box?
Fortunately the standard Panasonic Vlog to Rec 709 LUT is working fine and it matches the now available LUT the Avid supplies with the software so those two seem to agree.
