I have encountered a strange bug in the past, which which may be related...
When capturing within a project that had previously used a different i/o appliance I will get a system crash when using the VTR. This actually is more common doing tape outputs.
This happens where I work when switching between Nitris appliances, Aja IO appliances and newer Blackmagic ones. This also includes going between older DX appliances and newer ones from AVID, made by blackmagic.
The solution has always been to use a new project, created on the system with the IO appliance you are going to use. I have also had luck deleting the project settings, (and in shared projects, the sub folders for each bay).
Good Luck,

All those Sony decks have been pretty bulletproof for me. Since you
were using Digibeta when the problem happened, I wonder if it might have
been related to capturing a SD signal. I usually use a HDW-M2000 and
let it upconvert if I'm capturing from Beta SP or Digibeta.
