Actually, I think it was due to a change to the functionality of the dongles. They went from a software version system to a purely date based system. The newer dongle system authenticates your software based on the date your support ends. That way any new versions that get released are authenticated automatically based on the end date of your service contract as recorded by the dongle. Clearly some "options" still authenticate via dongle, for example "Symphony Option".
