That's the ideal situation to use Sony's Hyper gamma settings or as I call them "Suedo Log".

If with a 10 bit signal you only expose as normal then apply a log slope tgat rolls ofc the top you aren't using the top end of your digital recording. This can result in digital values at not much more than half what they could be. Granted that gives upper digital values in the 5-600 range which is double what 8 bit would have given but still less tgan the 1024 available.
Lots of advise online about pushing up the exposure if using lig but few follow it.
So imagine 8 bit under exposed and using log. A digital expisure range of possibly 160-170 values.
