I am aware of the BL plug, but haven't played with it.

Have you played around with the Baselight plugin? I have an Avid customer who swears by it. (We can discuss on Friday ;-)

I am a freelancer, and in most cases I am free to choose the NLE for a given project. I typically do long form documentary style work.
These days I start most new projects in Premiere. Still working on some legacy projects in Avid (I started on Avid in 1996). The only current NLE that I don't use is FCPX (I used FCP "Classic" quite a bit for several years).
And I have started exploring Resolve 14 (public beta), which has the potential to become my first choice for NLE as there are a lot of interesting features in it. Obviously it has a great color grading toolset. The new Fairlight Audio is attractive. If I find the editing tools robust, this might work as an all in one box (I dislike roundtripping). In some ways it reminds me of the long lost Avid DS.
But I am not quite ready to trust a long form deadline project to Resolve just yet.
And one thing about NLEs - every time I learn a new one, I get dumber on the rest of them. Muscle memory and experience counts for something.
Oh, one other point. Premiere seems to be the NLE of choice in many college media departments, so it is what the next generation is learning.
