Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Will DNxIO connect using an existing PCIe HBA from older NitrisDX?

I believe the host card is not included, but needs to be purchased separateky.

Not for nothing, but honestly if you buy a DNX I/O, why not just pull whatever card you have in the system and replace it with the (guaranteed working) card that comes with the DNX I/O? This runaround seems pretty pointless.

Thanks this is good info.  Perhaps I've not experienced this because I'm on a Mac system OS 10.9.5 right now.  On my home system I have kept the HIB that came with my NitrisDX in late 2012, I guess my use of the term Host Buss Adapter HBS is incorrect according to Dom's latest post, and so far I have not experienced any issues I'm aware of.

I do have a HIB that came with my DNxIO purchase back in 2015 when they had the deal to trade in an AJA IO Express for a price break.  To your knowledge does this problem potentially exist in a mac based system.

There were 2 active cards qualified for use with DNxIO, now they are down to one.

Important known issue:
Question: Why is my system hanging when using a DNxIO with an older HIB card?
Answer: Avid has identified a potential conflict between recent versions of the Blackmagic Design Desktop Video and an older model HBA interface adaptor provided by Avid prior to 2014. When Desktop Video 10.7 or later are installed in a Windows system with the HBA card with Avid part number 7030-30048-01, your system may experience hangs. Systems with newer HBA cards are unaffected.  Therefore, Avid does not recommend installing the Desktop Video 10.7 or 10.8 software on a system with this card until the issue is resolved. Avid and Blackmagic Design are actively working to resolve this issue.

Following up on this thread regarding older Host Bus Adapter Cards from a circa 2009 NitrisDX Purchase.  I'm assuming as Dom pointed out in this thread originally that the older HBA card is probably of the passive V1 variety.

If I were to just shot gun this and plug my DNxIO into this older HBA is there any chance of damage to any of the components or is it just a matter of no communications?

I do own a spare HBA card that came with the DNxIO so I can swap out the older card but I'm also concerned if the newer Active V2 or V3 card that I have will still talk to the older Nitris DX unit at work.

On my home system the HBA for my NitrisDX that I purchased in 2012 works with my DNxIO.  Does this mean that if I put my spare HBA into my work computer it will still work with the 2009 NitrisDX.  Basically I'm asking if the newer PCIE HBA cards are backward compatible.

AFAIK, if you use the 2 older HIB cards, DNXIO is not detected correctly by the OS and/or Media Composer.

I have no experience or knowledge regarding the HIB card with the DNXIO. If the part number is the same, I assume it would work.

Since the HIB card connects an external device directly to the PCIe bus you cannot hot swap the cable. That is like pulling a Decklink card out of the PCIe slot while the computer is on. You must shut down before you move the cable to or from the DNXIO.

I'm going to check the model number on the HBA or is it HIB at work.  I would guess given it came from 2009 era it will be an older HIB that is either passive of active Ver. 1.  Is there any harm in just plugging it in to see if it works.  Would the older HIBs somehow damage the DNxIO?  Also if the work HIB is the older model if we get a new one compatible with the DNxIO would it still work with the older NitrisDX bob.  I would like to have the ability to just switch the PCI3 cable between IO boxes in case I need universal mastering and any other feature that I might lose with the DNxIO.

As Dom said, there is an Avid specific one that costs 400. if you don't have the right one now with your Nitris DX.

However, the manual for the BM version just says:

"You can either purchase the UltraStudio 4K Extreme PCIe Cable Kit or you can use 'off the shelf' cards and cables from other manufacturers. PCIe is a universal standard for computer expansion cards so any adapter cards will work with UltraStudio 4K Extreme. To install a PCIe adapter card:"
