Re: [Avid-L2] Progressive export Upper Field?

Shane, I am pretty sure you can change the flag in source settings.  Have you tried that?

Would solve the immediate problem, but if there is a bug, it should be investigated, of course.

Ok...sorta.  I think Avid is flagging the footage as interlaced.  Because in Media Encoder, the Project Video Format when I import the clip is 1080i59.94 (but I don't see interlacing). When I try to change it to 1080p30, it says "The video format of the selected clips does not match the project settings. IN FACT...scrolling to the Field Dominance column I see that it's flagged as UPPER.  That should NOT be the case.  Again, Progressive project in Avid, Progressive footage, but the export is flagged as UPPER FIELD, and therefore Resolve is doing what it should...adding interlaced to that improperly flagged footage.

So...why is Avid flagging it as UPPER FIELD DOMINANCE then?  That's the question.  This was an issue on another project too.

Load the clip into BlackMagic Media Express. Does it play interlaced there? Because this does not seem like an Avid problem. Seems like a Resolve problem. Everything you are doing coming from Avid is good, including checking the mixdown file in Avid in both interlaced and progressive projects. I think this MXF is progressive, and Resolve is messing it up somehow. I trust Avid's field step over anything else to check if a file is truly interlaced or not.

OK...I shot this with my iPhone, which shoots progressive, so you won't be able to see the interlacing at the end as much, it's there, sorta, and you can see the jagged lines in the program monitor in Resolve, but here it is, download for best viewing:

Again, this is footage that Avid says is progressive, that when i play back in Avid in a progressive sequence shows as progressive, if I switch to an interlaced project, with 59.94i output selected..on my broadcast monitor connected via BMD Ultrastudio Extreme 4K...it shows progressive. If I then export this out of Avid from a project set to Progressive...it comes out interlaced. You see the lines in QT.  When brought into resolve, you see the interlacing RIGHT away.

OK...I have an Avid 1080p30 project with mixed interlaced and progressive footage. Playing that project I can see the interlaced footage as interlaced, it isn't conforming to the project settings.  If I then do a mix down as DNxHD and export same as source, the resulting file is flagged as Upper field first, even though I'm exporting it from a progressive project. ODDLY, if I reimport it, it'll say DNxHD 145 1080p30...upper field first.  How can it be 1080p30 and have a field dominance?

This file, when sent to an Alchemist for conversion, initially gets seen as 1080p30, but then when it hits the interlaced footage, stops and freaks out. It wasn't expecting interlaced footage. So somehow this file has mixed metadata.

So YOU can put interlaced and progressive into a Progressive 1080p30 project, mixdown, export that...and reimport it and it DOES NOT say UPPER FIELD when reimported?  I can do a demonstration video if you want...

So, IOW, your original question makes no sense at all.

What else are you not telling?
(Really, as always, whatever you say is incomplete, makes no sense at all an applies to no-one except you.)

Applied Time Warp and adjusted settings to progressive and made a ProRes mix down. THAT ONE exported at progressive, flagged as progressive. Mixed en to DNxHD 145 and 220, both options exported with an Upper Field flag.

Ok then

Are you sure there are no effects?
I rememer that Olivier once found out that FrameFlex always renders interlaced, no matter the settings.
(That kinda sucks, as it was a nice way of doing moves on large stills.)

I have a 1080p30 project.  I have a clip that is DNxHD 145 1080p30.  Progressive project, progressive clip.  I do a video mixdown to DNxHD 145 (even tried DNxHD 220x) due to some media on the timeline being long GOP... And then I export SAME AS SOURCE.  Just this patch for this one section with that clip.  And the export, when I check it, says UPPER FIELD first.  And I see interlacing on it.  HOW does this happen? How can I export a progressive clip, from a progressive project, with NO field dominance?

Thanks

Shane
