I've had crazy instances where SAS created a video file with more than one codec that was of massive size.  A video file that was mostly DNXHD but partly uncompressed.  I'm guessing that was a bug.  Transcoding the sequence first created a file of expected size.

Yes anything not in target codec would normally be transcoded to target codec.
But the whole point of SAS is same as source so transcode not needed.
So a video mixdown first is doing the transcode. Then its SAS export which is a re-wrap.
If you do a SAS export and all content has to be created or transcoded its not really a SAS.
