also, can you easily change formats and other settings via aja control panel on the offending systems?
at the os level, no mc launched.

and it is, but you can still swap the drives for troubleshooting purposes.
are all your macs the same generation? are the cards installed in the recommended slots?

That's a clever idea Marcel. I have never moved a system drive between systems. Does that work on a Mac. Are there any computer specific things that Apple installs during a system install? I always assumed an install was unique to a computer, but maybe that's a bad assumption.
