On a new gig today Mac OS 10.9.5 MacPro Tower with 4K Decklink Extreme video desktop ver 10.6. I worked for 6 hours straight and then had to quit Avid to clear an ama residual link to a QT .mov that wouldn't allow me to empty the trash. When I restarted I could no longer see video out of the Decklink Card and the Avid QUI wouldn't show any video. I got an error "exception std: What Vector. Turning off video monitoring stopped the error from popping up.
I then found that if I turned off the Hardware the timeline would play and I could see video in the Avid GUI. This behavior remained with different users different project and even a brand new project. We reloaded the video desktop 10.6 drivers but still the error.
Finally I tech support person said to create a new user from the new project window. First I tried creating a new user in the project itself but nothing. Then I quit out to the new project window and at the top you can create a new user, I had never noticed that, and when I created a new user there when I open the project voila it worked. I was then able to switch back to my user settings and it still worked. I have no idea why creating a new user in the new project window before opening a project is different than creating a new user while in a project but that's what fixed things. I tried complete power shutdowns etc... and nothing worked but this. Hope I can save someone else the grief I had with a brand new client.
Another very peculiar aspect in this problem was that in this bay the audio comes from a graham patten de embedder pulling audio 1-8 off the SDI out of the decklink card. When I was troubleshooting by turning off the hardware I could then monitor audio. So even though I had turned off the video hardware and could see not video coming out of the decklink card there was still audio embedded in the sdi signal. Turning the hardware on when the problem existed would not allow the sequence to play as it would just pop up the aforementioned error. Just a really fun way to spend an afternoon when you have a delivery deadline.
