Re: [Avid-L2] jpeg2000 (aka j2k) standard on Avid MCn

j2k has a wide range of uses:

-aquisition - all RED cameras use this type of compression, in the range of 3:1-20:1
-distribution - all DCPs(digital cinema packages) are jpeg2000 compressed at 250Mbps
-IMF(interoperable mastering format) and AS-02 packages for movie/broadcast versioning
-high-end video over IP(Nevion/TVIPS)
-archival

-codec allows for different levels of quality, including lossless
-resolution can be easily selected at the decoding end(i.e. same file can be decoded for both UHD and HD resolution)
-compression is intraframe, so not very efficient when compared with MPEG
-pretty heavy computationally - generally requires beefed up or dedicated HW(see RED Rocket)

Thanks Bogdan, if this the only reason people use it? (archival purposes)

The LoC site refers to "Lossless JPEG 2000 in Generic Container" is this the only way people use it?

Thanks,

Paul

iirc, it was specifically requested by one of the studios or networks - Disney or HBO - for archival purposes

I'm trying to help a colleague with a fairly large archiving/digitizing project for a career's worth of NTSC work. The last time I posted about this someone mentioned capturing in jpeg2000.

Since (or when) jpeg2000 was introduced as a compression flavor in the Avid world (for both SD & HD)… what niche was it supposed to occupy or need was it supposed to fill?

Without having worked with it, I associate it with archiving and know it is promoted for that by the Library of Congress as there is a lossless version of it. Because it has jpeg in the name, one assumes it offers a compressed flavor, but that is as much as I know and I would like to learn more.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Paul
