Re: [Avid-L2] Best Nvidia graphics Card for Mac Tower - Help

For what it's worth, I have a PC version of the GTX-680.  The EFI mod is easy to do yourself with info I got from Netkas.org, and I now have a boot screen.   Newer cards require soldering chips, which I would never attempt myself.  Current versions of Adobe CC and Avid require no hacks to recognize the GTX-680.  I know the 700 series really pushes the limit on the PSU if you have a 12 core and filled PCI slots.   Glad to hear the newer cards are more efficient.

Good info.  I already own the two TitanX cards from a tax purchase at the end of last year.  Given I will keep my GTX-680 in place as the GUI Video Card in the tower and will place the two TitanX cards in a Cyclone Expansion chassis the power supply concerns aren't a problem and the EFI boot screen is not an issue as that will be handled by the 680 in the tower.  What I have to figure out is if I were to boot to some of my older Mac OS startup drives like 10.8.5 will I still be able to access the TitanXs with applications that take advantage of multiple GPUs?  I'm told by MacVidCards that I need to be on Mac OS 10.10 in order for the TitanX moded card to work.  Actually the said the Titan X requires OS 10.10.  I don't know if that is a blanket statement or means that for a titanX to function as the GUI with a boot screen 10.10 OS is required or if they need 10.10 to function period.  Perhaps this has more to do with available nVidia drivers.

I like the 680 remaining so I can at least boot to older startup drives in a pinch even if it means the TitanXs are no longer usable I could at least access legacy software if needed.

There is a Mac version of the GTX 680, EFI native and drivers built in to the OS.The Quadro K5000 uses the same core config but with 1/24 FP accuracy.

If you use a PC/BIOS based NVidia card without the EFI mod, you will lose the boot screen. MacVid or DIY are your options.

Many, if not most PC based cards in a Mac will require you to install the NVidia OS X drivers. Check the Nvidia website for the drivers OS X requirements.

Newer version of Adobe CC (2014 and higher I think) do not require the MPE text file to be modified. Adobe unlocked it. As long as you meet the basic GPU requirement, CUDA and/or OpenCL acceleration are available.

If you are considering the Titan X, I would wait. The NVidia 10xx series are more efficient. This means the GTX 1070 is about as fast as the Titan X at 60% of the power draw. Meaning, you may not need a PSU modification. But the card is new and not sure the EFI mod is even an option or the NVidia OS X drivers have been updated to support it.

Curious why you say GTX-680 is native support.  I purchased one that was Mac friendly from EVGA.  The K5000 is a different card isn't it?  Have there been no mac friendly versions of the GTX-780 or GTX-980?  I never looked at those since I've had the GTX-680.  Does this mean that the only avenue for the later GTX-Xs or the titan/titanx is macvidcards to get the right boot efi installed if you want the boot screen?  Another gotcha I had with the 680 was I had to hack the allowed GPUs text file for Adobe CS 6 so that it would recognize the 680 for gpu acceleration.  I'm told the Creative Cloud Adobe suites will recognize the 680 and don't need the hack but I haven't checked that out specifically.

There are also OS requirements for the different cards.  I'm currently purchasing and expansion chassis after I got two TitanX cards at the end of last year.  My plan is to keep the GTX-680 in the tower mac pro and put the two titanxs in the expansion chassis.  Then I won't be required to send the titanxs to macvidcards and it will allow me to startup on older Mac OSs as needed.  I'm told with the titanX I would need to run MacOS 10.10 at a minimum for it to work.  The older Titan cards didn't have that requirement of OS 10.10.  What I'm not fully versed in is what if I run Mac OS 10.9.5 with the 680 as the GUI will the titanX cards be usable at all.  I was told by MacVidCards, who can mac flash the titanXs, that I would need to be on 10.10 in order for them to work.  I don't know if that means that's what is necessary for them to work in a non GUI capacity to speed up Resolve, Adobe Etc...  Terry C mentioned that I'd have to be on the latest OS for Resolve to see the two TitanX GPUs for extra processing power so I understand that is a requirement along with the later Resolve versions require a minimum of 10.10 just to be able to install the software.  So I will be learning more down the line in this regards.  Anyone got any insight into my expansion chassis quandries along with my super dooper TitanX overclocked models from the end of last year?

GTX680/K5000 is the most powerful in terms of native support.
However this is 3 generations behind the current NVidia GPUs (7xx, 9xx and 10xx) and supply is very low if any.

You can get up to the 9xx series but would require a hardware modification (EFI mod). Without it, you would lose the gray boot screen.
http://www.macvidcards.com/  can do the mod for you if you like.

If you can live without having the gray boot screen, then any modern Nvidia card will work assuming you have the proper power configuration (see FAQs at  http://www.macvidcards.com/)

The boot screen should only be necessary if you are troubleshooting certain hardware problems. Keep your older EFI based Nvidia or ATI card handy just in case.

I've got a VFX editor working on a Mac Tower that currently has an inadequate video card, especially as he's doing a lot of work on Smoke (aka Smack). Can anyone suggest the specific card that I should try to acquire, something beefy, something with the right coding for After Effects and Smoke?

Thanks!
