Actually, there seems to be some confusion about the necessity of an Avid DNxIO box for this to work.
And the wording that is in the first post:
This version introduces Fusion Connect for Avid MC on MAC OSX as well as Windows.
Fusion Connect will work with the free version of Fusion and Avid MC with the Artist DNxIO box and also work in Fusion Studio.

You don't need the dongle, Avid's DNxIO box or the paid version of Fusion (Studio) to get hold of the Connect plugin - it's available for free from Blackmagic's support section. This was the case with version 8, but it was never officially stated that the free version of Fusion would work with the AVX plugin - that's what's changed with the release of version 8.1.
