[Avid-L2] Explaining Bias on a Feathered Edge?

I do a lot of basic blurring in Paint Effect.  Feathered edges are the norm.  I find I rarely use the bias adjustment in my work.  Today I was showing an AE how use paint effect instead of blur effect.  She was curious about the bia adjustment and went to the avid help to find a clearer explanation.  In Avid help it says bias adjusts where the dissipation of pixels occurs starts at the outer or inner edge or somewhere in the middle.  It also mentions it's most effective when dealing with traced elements.  The AE is more Adobe savvy so as I read this I likened the effect to the photoshop expand and contract modifiers to a selection.  Does this make sense to anybody else.  The bias isn't really effecting the softness of the transition but it seems to expand or contract where the transition happens.  Just figured I should see if I'm blowing smoke here or do I have the parameter comparison correct.  As they say it what I learn after I know it all that really counts.  ;-)
