Re: [Avid-L2] Standard Meal Policys?

Everyone's points are valid but none have address my question.  I wasn't deprived of food but I didn't really get meal breaks.  I certainly could have left to go out for a meal but it was easier to just pound through.  When I worked at ABC back in the 80's it was fairly common to work through a meal period and maybe eat in the bay and then add the meal time to the end of the session.  That wasn't forced on us but if the producers and the NABET personnel agreed it often happened.  My question is really simple I know the first meal is in 5 hours and then there a 2nd meal etc....  just curious what those that are on the list, some who I believe work for this very network, have to suggest as to how the meal times should be structured.

As far as all the health concerns everything posted here is true but after 30 plus years I wasn't going to miss my first air deadline.  I will say back in the linear days if this happened I would have been surrounded by PAs working with the Chyron and tape ops covering my back.  Plus the Executive Producer, who really knew how to call the shots and probably would have avoided putting us in the time crunch,  along with the director would be in the bay till the bitter end.

In this recent case after deciding to re edit a section of the show to allow for a longer credit act at 2:am the day before air the Executive Producer left.  Back in the day the Captain knew to go down with the ship but now it is very disappointing the lack of knowledge or even concern for the finishing process.  It's like they act like once it's offlined it's just a button or two and everything is full rez and color corrected and mixed.  A part of the staff, including me, felt like if we didn't make air it might teach them a lesson but we all know that never happens and I'm sure if we hadn't finished in time the finger would have been pointed at the mixer and myself.  That's the truly problematic nature of the business today.  I'm not complaining I knew the job was dangerous when I took it.  I was surprised when our mixer who I believe is in his 30's has only done 2 other over nighters in his career.  Cue the old fart scene where I've spent more time on overnighters than you've been in the business sonny boy.   ;-)

I totally agree. My comment was more in response to Sol. The attitude put forward in his statement felt very dismissive to me. Along the lines of how dare anyone even ask for meal compensation, if you can't work without meal breaks then get out of the business. I should have gone on to say that it's perfectly reasonable to expect to be treated in a fair and decent manner across the board. That as a employe or contractor your personal safety is respected. And respected at a fundamental level that shouldn't have to be dictated by regulations.

But, on those occasions that I have worked extended hours to meet a deadline, to the point that I've decided to just break out the cot and sleep at the studio, or have my wife come get me and drive me home, there is compensation in more than just gratitude. There is compensations in money. And it's earned. And it's deserved. And I have no shame in expecting it.

Our bodies are not designed to work 18+ hours and then operate a motor vehicle safely. Brent Hershman, Gary Joe Tuck and probably many others died died because of bad scheduling and productions trying to save money. Note that those men's deaths were 17 years apart. Our industry has learned nothing. --J.B.
