Though I like the BBC approach in principle I can't help but think what
a disaster PAL really was in terms of compromises with unexpected
consequences (8 field sequence anyone), then of course there was D-MAC /
D2-MAC and and all the other 'evolution over revolution' approaches that
have failed in the last 20 years. Sometimes it's just better to clean
cut to new technology. I'm sure if we make everything for HDR there will
be an inexpensive box produced to desat via a LUT for standard
television. And really there is not need to go the other way as the
standard channels would have their own post processing in the receiver
to make them look as good as they can.
