John,
My guess is that the special FN keys are only available on certain apple keyboards. For example laptops definitely have them. And on my iMac with its (non G5, flat style) keyboard there is a special 'fn' button - but I don't think that was a button that was available on the G5 keyboard.
My guess is that the OS sees that the button isn't available, and disables that option in the system preferences.
(there aren't any special functions available on the G5 style keyboards if I'm remembering right).

I know I'm supposed to go to to system preferences and check the "Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." option. I also relearned that I have to deactivate the mission control buttons setting them all to a dash. Okay that all worked for the person I was helping so the problem was solved for them but I was consulting from my home system and I find on my home system when I go to system preferences - keyboard I don't even see the standard check box for "Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." It doesn't exist on the page. It does however show up on the system the person I was helping is working on. I'm perplexed as to how I don't even see the option on my MacPro 12 core OS 10.8.5. I tried re enabling a mission control F Key but still no choice shows up in keyboard system preferences for "Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.". I feel like I've lost my mind here. I'm using a logickeyboard Avid G5 style keyboard. I remember that the function key "Fn" on my laptop mbp is lower left but I can't recall where that exists on a standard keyboard. I remember using the Fn button to access the various functions on my mbp laptop which I have set to "Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." IIRC I could also do that on my full tilt keyboards but that may have been the newer slim line keyboards that I don't like to use.Bottom line is my home system works fine in Avid the F keys work for my short cuts but I'm curious why I don't see the "Enable "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." option under keyboard. Could this be a result of the Avid Logic Keyboard being detected by the system and therefore not even offering the option. I'll have to check later today on my work system.John Moore Barking Trout Productions Studio City, CA bigfish@pacbell.net
