Select in Media Tool then Clip Menu>Unlock Bin Selection (it does work with the Media Tool)?

Well Im trying to delete from the media tool as I consolidated the shows and want to keep only those clips. So using the media tool I can not delete. If I go into the media folders I may be deleting media I need . Im trying to make space by deleting media files form a large project. But when select in media tool and try to delete I see "File 00321U00.MXF is locked. I hit OK and it all stops so I can't delete.
How do these files get locked and how do I get them unlocked. On Mac os 10.8.5.
