That error means nothing and everything... I see it all the time - with no rhyme or reason as to what went wrong. To me it means, 'Hi, I'm about to crash'.
Try setting your hard drive's root level read/write to 'everyone'...
Apple doesn't do that by default, but Media Composer seems to want that.
But, also, try running the uninstaller, and then re-install (Avid software).
