Yes some of us do use audio punch-in. Any time we need to do a VO or comm to pictures.
Generally we are using NitrisDX for that - and are also starting to see the first 4K tests being done (mostly on PPro) so a 4K Avid blessed IO is welcome. BM as the manufacturer less attractive than AJA would've been.
Occasionally have to turn off (eg Aja) monitoring and use an audio card for punch-in. Bit Mickey Mouse and NFG if talent needs to see pictures and is in a different room though.
Also used to use punch-in to add external compression/eq/auto-ducking to a mix, but the RTAS plug-ins have largely negated the need for that. Thankfully.
Redundant power is a bit of a joke though. On the rare occasions I've played live to air from the Avid, security of power to the IO was way down the long list of potential catastrophic failures that could ensue.
