Q. What are the differences between Avid Artist | DNxIO and the similar-looking Blackmagic Ultrastudio product?
A. Avid has the exclusive ability to offer the following:
- Real-time DNxHR hardware encoding, coming as a future no-cost software upgrade (restrictions may apply; functionality may be limited to certain software applications or operating systems). Avid DNxHR encoding gives you greater beauty without the bandwidth, with encoding that is optimized for the needs of post-production. Choose from a range of settings from lightweight proxies to mastering-quality 4K and Ultra HD.
- Audio punch-in. With a front-panel microphone input jack, it's quick and easy to record audio on-the-fly.
- Fusion Connect Plug-in for Media Composer ($200 value). Advanced visual effects, motion graphics and compositing used on over 1000 major Hollywood blockbuster feature films, provided as a plug-in to operate within Media Composer. Also includes Fusion 7 software.
- Two power cables for redundant connection
- Warranty, service and support provided by Avid's world class customer care team
- Choice of Standalone or Bundled with Media Composer. Avid plans to offer:
- Standalone Artist | DNxIO. Ideal if you already own Media Composer or other applications, including Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Resolve and more.
- Artist | DNxIO with Media Composer perpetual license. This tested, proven solution includes everything above, plus a full perpetual Media Composer license and activation card (software download required—software never expires), and a one-year Avid upgrade and support plan providing all Media Composer upgrades and expert help for 12 months (renewable annually).
- Artist | DNxIO with Media Composer 2-year subscription. This tested, proven solution includes everything above, plus a 2-year Media Composer subscription (software download required—must renew subscription after 24 months to continue using the software), and an Avid upgrade and support plan providing all Media Composer upgrades and expert help throughout an active subscription
Q. Will the future upgrade to support DNxHR hardware encoding be for Media Composer only, or for other applications as well?
A. Media Composer will add support for DNxHR hardware encoding in a future release. In addition, Avid will cooperate with other companies' efforts to enable DNxHR hardware encoding for other applications, as well as exploring additional options. Details of capabilities will be provided at a later date.

Q: Will Avid Artist | DNxIO support surround sound audio output?
A: Full 5.1 or 7.1 monitoring will not be available in the initial release. Media Composer will provide a four channel down mix of 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound sequences for output to the four analog channels in your choice of quadraphonic, LCRS, or LCRLfe configurations
Q: How does Avid Artist | DNxIO connect to a host computer?
A: DNxIO will connect to a host computer via a Thunderbolt 2 connection or a PCIe connection to a HIB card in the host.
Q: Will DNxIO ship with a specific host connection cable type?
A: No, the host connection cable will be ordered separately since there is a choice for how to connect (Thunderbolt 2 or PCIe) For Thunderbolt 2 connectivity, customers also have the option of using a powered cable which is 2 meters long, or can order optical cables at up to 6 meters in length from their preferred cable provider.
Q: What options are available for purchasing PCIe connectivity?
A: Only Avid sold PCIe cables and Host Interface PCIe cards will only support for PCIe connect DNxIO configurations
Q: Will the PCIe cable and adapter that worked with Mojo DX and Nitris DX work with the DNxIO?
A: We are currently testing this configuration but are unable to confirm this at this time.
Q. Does DNxIO support audio punch in?
A: Yes, Artist | DNxIO will include audio punch-in. Details of capabilities will be provided at a later date.
Q. Does DNxIO support video satellite?
A. Details of DNxIO support for video satellite will be provided at a later date.
Q. Does DNxIO run with Pro Tools?
A. Details of DNxIO compatibility with Pro Tools will be provided at a later date.
Q. Will DNxIO support simultaneous capture of high res and proxy?
A. DNxIO will support a single stream of ingest- there are no current plans to support simultaneous proxy generation
Q. Can you use the Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer without DNxIO connected?
A. Use of the Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer requires DNxIO to be connected to Media Composer. If a user attempts to access the plugin in Media Composer without DNxIO connected to the system, the plugin will not function.
Q: What Operating Systems will the Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer be supported on?
A: The Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer will work with both Mac and Windows versions of Media Composer
Q: What versions of Media Composer will the Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer be supported on?
A: The Fusion Connect Plugin for Media Composer will require Media Composer v8.4.1 or higher
Q: Does this partnership have any effect on other Open I/O partners?
A: Avid is committed to the Open I/O program as a part of the Avid Connectivity partners. We will continue to enhance the Open I/O SDK for our partners to take advantage of new features.
Q: Can you run DNxIO with older versions of Media Composer software?
A: DNxIO is supported with Media Composer v8.4.1 and higher. Previous versions of software will not be tested or qualified as there were a number of software changes necessary to support the hardware.
Q: Can you capture AVC-I media through DNxIO (like you can with the Nitris DX AVC-I)?
A: While DNxIO will not support hardware assisted encode/capture of AVC-I material, AVC-I capture will be enabled for all Media Composer configurations starting with Media Composer 8.4. The AVC-I encoding will be processed by the host CPU- higher end CPU's may be required for this function.
Q: Does DNxIO support Closed Captioning and Ancillary data?
A: Closed Captioning and Ancillary data capabilities are planned; further details will be available closer to availability date.
