Brings back many memories!
I was a young fella in my mid-20s when I learnt how to edit quad tape with magnetic developing fluid and a tape splicer. I've forgotten how many scans you had to count from the vertical sync pulse – it's 40 years since I did it.
Not that it was the usual way for editing, but saved the day when a program tape broke (bloody AVR-1s! – fast but deadly!)
