[Avid-L2] Re: What's a Nitrix DX like in this day and age?

Thought I'd write a follow up.

Thanks to all the feedback, decided to take the plunge and get the Nitris DX on offer.
I'm starting editing on monday, and yesterday and today are about prepping the room for the months to come. Also, my assistant is still finishing with sorting the project rushes. He kept complaining getting a lot of "play consumer error" (or something like that) on a lot of clips. Bit of googling and we realised that it could be linked to the Matrox Mini we're using for monitoring (MC 8.3 on Mac 10.8.5), as there's even an article in the Avid Knowledge Base telling you how to remove a file inside the MC app when there are problems with "3rd party hardware".

So I told him if he wanted to try the Nitris DX since it was waiting on a shelf. After all, it would only take 5 minutes to swap. We did that and the error message never came back. Also, as he has spent 5 weeks synching the rushes, he's pretty familiar with the look and grain of those. He was astonished "it looks so much crisper, the shadows in the night scenes are incredibly more detailed". He was happy.

I didn't get to play with it yet, but from what I've seen the system seems more responsive, and just looking at the Composer window on playback shows a big difference. With the Matrox, Composer would only show about 5 or 10 frames per second, where with the Nitris, it's just fluid and no jerkiness. Not that it matters since I'm usually looking at the big monitor, but it feels good.

Icing on the cake is that we can have the Output Mask added to the HD monitor without to have a mask fx on a V track.

So all in all, very happy with the purchase. But mainly because it was a second hand deal at a 1000€. Would have never been able to get one for the usual 6.

Not that noisy, but we have most of them quiet boxes with the rest of the gear. The cable is about 6'.
