I've also come to it from the other end as a flame artist that edits... I've watched every single developer struggle and fail at marrying offline and online vfx. The requirements are just very different and I could go on for hours about real time performance requirements of editorial vs guaranteed quality requirements of online but it's not really needed other than to say 16x fibre channel, dual quadro k6000, 16+ cores etc etc are not something most editors will want to pay for to ensure a better vfx environment.
I don't know that there is even enough of a middle ground to not disappoint in either editorial or vfx such that every system that's tried falls between two stools not specialized enough in either area to compete with other products. I love my Avids and I love my flame and resolve and Id rather bounce between them than see a compromised effort at fusing them.
