[Avid-L2] Re: HDR at last!

Answering several questions at once here. From the Dolby presentation at last year's HPA tech retreat, I learned the following:

Dolby tested actual viewers with a variety of material on a special rig that achieved extreme brightness by marrying tow projectors into a normal sized monitor. What they found is human's can perceive up to 20,000 Nits, and are comfortable at 10,000 nits. Currently Dolby can only achieve 4,000 nits. The monitors we watch now deliver 100 nits.

They need to go to 12 bit to handle the data.

The increase in dynamic range increases the chroma. Hence improved color.

Many cameras are capable of delivering the increased range now, and of course film is also.
