Re: [Avid-L2] WMV recommendations

There's really no great way to create high-quality WMV files on a Mac. The "Studio Pro HD" version of Flip4Mac is OK, but it's $179. The other versions do a significantly lower-quality job. I don't know why that is, but I experimented with Player Pro, Studio and Studio Pro HD, and found that only the $179 version made good WMVs.

A much better way to go is with a Windows partition on a Mac. As Roger and Tim said, Microsoft's free encoding software will make great-looking WMV files -- even at lower bitrates.

The production company I'm working at these days has one cheap PC in the assistants' room for the sole purpose of making WMV files. The requests for WMVs are few and far between these days, but WMVs comes up sometimes in the list of deliverables for a few big clients. If you care about your deliverables looking as good as possible, the WMV files should be created in the Windows world.

Take care -- Mark Block
