The request was for a sync roll ingest of the fill reel and the matte key reel. Not all elements have alpha so there are long stretches of black on the matte key reel but in order to sync roll ingest that's the only way to do it. There are 2 and a half hours of graphics reels hence the sync roll ingest to save time. Given it's a one off live show, not a series and the multitude of graphic elements I don't think economizing black space is a priority. The repetitive pattern of a 1 sec slate 90 frames before every element landing on even non drop minutes or 20 second marks for shorter elements seems the only way not to make my or the EVS operators' head not explode. If it was a regular sports event then sure once a pattern is established I'd get feedback from the EVS crew and economize where I can, but flying blind I don't want to make it too random. This is the way I would have wanted my graphic elements in a linear bay. Of course I was never a paint box/Hal operator so I don't stress over a few extra frames here and there.

All elements start at even minutes or 20 and 40 second points between minutes when they are short grfx. They are labeled "Keyed Over Black", "Fill Video" and "Matte Key Alpha". A separate reel has just the Matte keys for the fill video section that I inverted from Avid key signal to make them more switcher friendly as per a discussion with the director and the time code matches the foreground reel. I think I will send them an edl with Clip Names to help identify the elements.
