Oh joy.
Can't toy with it myself, as my licences are still in the pipeline for upgrading.
(And i'm having a couple of days off....)
Does this also happen if you import an STL instead of a text based file?
(Granted, STL sucks as there are too many dialects floating around, and i have no idea if there is a Chinese or Japanese char set for STL)
Only alternative i have now is to render PNG's with Alpha and edit them in using a macro application (that takes a bit of fiddling around before you have that working),
or render a QT with Alpha of just the subs and overlay that.
(dog slow import, no idea if AMA supports alpha in the latest version. Other than import time, it works swell)
Subbits, my subtitle tool can do both images and QT.
But it highly annoys me that something so simple as text with border is a complicated effect that has bugs...

8.3 fixed part of the problem. Bouke, what was happening was that if a subtitle contained a non-standard character, say a letter with an accent like "é", anything on the subtitle after that letter disappeared. 8.3 fixed it, though there are still some characters that throw subcap in a panic. Like the & character for instance.
Have a look here for an example with screengrabs:
