Speed still matters but it all depends on many factors. And remember that 2.5 to 2.8 is only 12% higher. In the long term I guess it does add up (seconds here, couple of minutes there).

Big differences between Core 2 Duo, i5, and i7.  

I see lots of different price points on B&H, but not a $1000 difference in the same family.
