[Avid-L2] Re: Dongles updates deadline?

I agree that Avid is pricing its product fairly, particularly given Avid's dominant market position with big clients. $299 seems like a good compromise price, encouraging the large shops to stay current while not hurting the little guys like me. It's a big adjustment -- a good one -- by Avid.

After using FCP Classic exclusively since 2007 (but Avid from 1992 to 2007), I finally moved back to Media Composer this summer. The 32-bit architecture of FCP 7 finally caught up with it, and I see a massive shift away from it this year -- at small shops, at schools, and also with "part-time" editors (like directors who fool around with editing their own stuff every now and then). Unlike Switthaus, I see no movement toward FCP X in my area; professionally, I have to go with the flow. Editing suites are being optimized for Avid (with FCP 7 and Automatic Duck on a secondary boot drive for handling revisions), while schools, directors and lower-end editors are moving to Premiere Pro.

My youngest sons's college used FCP classic up until the fall 2013 semester, but now they offer both Premiere Pro and FCP X to the students. He tells me that FCP X is rarely used by anyone. My older son, who will graduate from NYU later this year, tells me anecdotally that his undergrad friends at Tisch have moved from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro for their projects.

This is a huge fail for Apple -- not necessarily in sales, but in usage. I'm sure FCP X has sold like gangbusters and made a ton of money for Apple, but I would guess that Apple lost a good deal of market share, if one were to look at actual usage. And I don't want to count tutorials as actual usage! ;) Although I tested out FCP X with two jobs (and revisions) in the last year, most of my FCP X time was spent doing tutorials, or trying to learn the new workflow and trackless paradigm while doing those two paying jobs.

Take care -- Mark Block

I can't see this as underhand by Avid at all. The world and the markets changed. Avid can't exist on the whims of Post house and user upgrades every few years.
Avid software is either useful to you or not and if $299 is too much then its not the tool for you. And if you need it in an add hoc way then follow the Adobe route, the only Adobe route, and rent as needed.
I'm really expecting and hoping for some big feature changes before year end. But the devil part of me hopes that happens in early 2015 and rewards those that paid the $299 and trusted to Avid to deliver.  And the rest are left cutting on fcpx untill Apple decide to change the game again....
